Third Level Equality and Inclusion Learning and Teaching

This learning plan is intended to form part of a holistic learning journey for pupils which focuses on addressing discrimination and prejudiced based bullying. The learning starts in Early Level and continues through to Senior Phase

In this third level unit pupils are learning:

  • the importance of identity to human beings, and I can understand that this is a complex idea composed of many characteristics
  • that the Equality Act 2010 sets out to protect people from discrimination based upon these characteristics, and I can describe these
  • that the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child offers special protection to children
  • that some people struggle to come to terms with difference, and that this can lead to discriminatory and bullying behaviour
  • the deeper meaning of the call of the Christian to love others, and to act accordingly; I can share my response to this
  • that Justice, Respect and Compassion are essential elements in bringing about God’s Kingdom, and this requires me to challenge prejudice
  • that we are all called to live with love, and to be reconciled with one another after situations of conflict.

This theme complements the learning and teaching outlined in ‘Called To Love’ and should be used in conjunction with the activities and resources for S1&2

All of these materials note that within a Catholic school the starting point for any work with young people in the area of Equality, Inclusion and Justice is rooted in the Church's vision of what it means to be in relationship with God and others.  The materials hosted on this page  should be used in conjunction with the existing RE Guidance 'This Is Our Faith' and current RSHP/HWB/RERC resources for Relationships and Moral Education – Called to Love (Secondary schools) and God’s Loving Plan (Primary schools)
