“You are the salt of the earth,” Archbishop Leo Cushley told hundreds of young people who were part of a packed congregation in Our Lady of Good Aid Cathedral in Motherwell on the evening of Thursday 24th October 2013.  Archbishop Cushley was speaking at the end of a Mass during which he recalled growing up and being a young priest in the Diocese of Motherwell.  He said that he wished to make particular mention of the young people who had gathered from every secondary school in the Diocese of Motherwell.

Referring to the Gospel of Matthew (5:13-16) where Christ uses the metaphors of salt and light to encourage his disciples, the new Archbishop explained that, just as salt has an unminstakeable taste, young people should be distinctive in their faith.  He encouraged them to be brave enough to shine out and be “light” for the world, helping others to find the way to truth and happiness in Jesus Christ.
