To make the establishment of the St Andrew’s Foundation in the University of Glasgow to support the University’s mission to Catholic teacher education in Scotland, the Catholic Education Commission will present the Foundation with an icon of St Andrew which has been especially commissioned for this occasion.

Background

Some time ago, Fr John Hughes, Rector of Scots College in Rome was asked if he could obtain a suitable icon of St. Andrew which would be presented to the St. Andrew’s Foundation .  Fr. Hughes, given his own long involvement in Scottish Catholic Education and his years lecturing in the University, was pleased to be asked to undertake this task. He duly enlisted the advice and assistance of Mgr. Charles Burns and together they visited the various locations in Rome where such an icon might be found. After some months a new icon was duly designed and crafted by the iconographer before being brooght to Scots College where it received a solemn blessing.

Launch events

The University of Glasgow and the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland have arranged two events to mark the launch of the St Andrew’s Foundation.  These are designed to reflect the unique form of partnership between the Church and the University in the delivery and support of teachers for Catholic schools in Scotland.  The events will also mark the work of the former Catholic Teacher education establishments and the contributions of Catholic teachers over many generations.  So it will be fitting to see, among those attending these events, many who have worked in Catholic schools and Catholic teacher training colleges, as well as those currently working in Catholic schools.

Friday 14th June 2013, 7pm           Thanksgiving Mass for all involved in Education will be celebrated in St Andrew’s Cathedral, Glasgow and followed by a civic reception in the Briggait.
