The Catholic Education Commission has developed a Religious Education syllabus for the Senior Phase, building on the syllabus provided in This Is Our Faith for the Broad General Education phase of the curriculum in Catholic schools.
The draft document proposes a number of Experiences and Outcomes, organised under the 8 Strands of Faith described in This Is Our Faith. It also specifies Core Learning for each E/O and, in some cases, provides some details to illustrate how this learning might be unpacked further. This draft document is intended to provide for progression from the learning which pupils will experience in the Primary school stages and in S1-S3, following guidance given in This Is Our Faith. The proposed Experiences and Outcomes are intended to be achievable across S4/5/6, given the age and stage of the students, within the stipulated provision of 2 hours of formal RE per week.
NB This time allocation is stipulated by the Catholic Education Commission, on behalf of the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland, and cannot be deviated from within any school, without the explicit agreement and consent of the local Bishop.
The Holy See has been asked to consider this document with a view to granting a Decree of Recognitio, as it did for the original document. In the meanitme, it is hoped that all those responsible for teaching and/or managing religious education will find this to be a useful and stimulating document which will help them to review their current provision and to plan for future development. NB The CEC is not expecting any school to make radical changes to their current provision on the basis of this current draft at this stage. However, every Catholic secondary school is expected to engage with the document and to give it careful consideration.
