The Gonzaga Lecture Series was launched in the mid-1990s with a view to providing a forum for the exploration and discussion of themes in contemporary Theology and society. They typically take place during Lent and over the years we have been lucky to welcome a range of speakers from across the globe.

We are delighted to host this year’s Gonzaga lecture series in person again at St Aloysius’ College. The theme of the series is “Jesuit Schools at the Service of Evangelisation” and will consist of the following lectures:

Wednesday 8th March, 7pm

Dr John Stoer – Delegate for Education for the British Province of the Jesuits

‘Catholic religious education and faith formation in a pluralist world’

Having taught religious education in Catholic schools for many years, John retired as Head of St Aloysius’ College in 2013. He completed a PhD at Glasgow University in 2019 and his thesis argued for a new approach to Catholic religious education making use of Church teaching on other religions and guidance on inter-religious dialogue. John is currently the Delegate for Education for the British Province of the Jesuits.

Wednesday 22nd March, 7pm

Professor Jonathan Cavanagh – Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Glasgow

‘Excellence for Service’

Professor Jonathan Cavanagh was educated at St Aloysius’ College, Glasgow (1975-1985). He read medicine at the University of Glasgow followed by postgraduate studies at the University of Edinburgh.

He is a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Glasgow and Hon Consultant Neuropsychiatrist at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. His research is focused on understanding the immunological basis of neuropsychiatric symptoms and his work involves in vivo biological and brain neuroimaging studies.

The lectures are free of charge and will be held in St Aloysius’ College Hall, 45 Hill Street, G3 6RJ.

To register a place, please email communications@staloysius.org, stating the lecture(s) you would like to register for.
