St Martin’s RC Primary School is a denominational school with a nursery class. It serves the towns of Tranent, Ormiston, Pencaitland, Macmerry, Elphinstone and Winton. The roll was 181, including 45 in the nursery, when the inspection was carried out in November 2009. Children’s attendance was in line with the national average in 2007/2008. The headteacher has been in post since March 2009.

Particular strengths of the school

  • Friendly and welcoming ethos based on trust and sound values.
  • Engaging children who speak proudly of their school.
  • Partnership working with other schools, community groups and agencies to support children’s learning experiences.
  • The commitment of staff to bringing about improved outcomes for the children.
  • The dynamic leadership of the headteacher.

Example of good practice

  • Building community links to support children and families.
